Energy Savings With Home Automation

Home automation provides various energy management options that improves the efficiency of your home and saves you money.

At a high level, you can track your home's total energy consumption—and production if you have solar.

This is achieved by integrating your existing solar inverter with your home automation system, allowing you to monitor real-time energy usage and analyse historical trends, such as power consumption by time of day, all in one place.

If you don’t have solar, you can still gain valuable insights by installing an affordable energy monitor in your power distribution board.

The next level of detail can be achieved by monitoring energy consumption of individual circuits in your home.

This is achieved by installing devices in your switchboard that use clamps on each circuit to monitor energy usage. The data can be viewed in near real-time or analysed over time to identify trends.

The devices come in two form factors (pictured) - one that mounts on the DIN rail and one that is mounted in free space at the back of the switchboard. The devices need to be installed by a licensed electrician.

For the highest level of detail, individual devices' power consumption can be monitored using smart power points or plugs. These devices not only track energy usage but also allow you to turn appliances on and off through your home automation system.

By combining these options, you can implement advanced automations to reduce energy costs, such as:

  • Turning devices on or off based on solar power generation levels.

  • Automatically switching off lights, fans, and air conditioners when no one is home.

  • Using occupancy sensors to turn off devices when a room is unoccupied.

With the data collected and stored in your home automation system, you can analyse power consumption trends and measure the impact of these optimizations.

Only a fully integrated home automation solution, like our preferred Home Assistant, offers this level of control and automation. If you’d like to learn more, Contact Us today!
